"The Anonymous Works of Robert Boyle and the Reasons
Why a Protestant Should not Turn Papist (1687)." Journal of the History
of Ideas 55 (1994), 611-29.
Abstract: Robert Boyle was the author of several works that
appeared without his name on the title page. It has long been assumed that one
of these was Reasons Why a Protestant Should not Turn Papist (London, 1687),
but this has never been established. This essay reviews all the available evidence
about Boyle's authorship, denies the attribution, and identifies the real author
as the Scottish physician David Abercromby (d. 1702), a former Jesuit who was
a principal recipient of Boyle's patronage in the 1680s.
