Covenant Presbyterian Church - Youth Leader Harleysville, PA
Covenant Presbyterian Church is seeking to fill a half-time youth leader position. This is a new position for CPC, but the youth group has been in existence for nearly ten years under volunteer leadership. Currently, youth in grades seven through twelve are welcome in the group, and there are approximately 25 young people in that age range, though many are not participating in the group at this time. The successful applicant for this new position will be supported by a team of volunteers, who will assist the leader in planning events, running the Sunday evening meetings, and reaching out to the youth.
Primary Objectives: To develop and oversee the youth group program as it partners with the Covenant community to foster Christian attitudes and Biblical knowledge in our junior and senior high students, equipping them to live as disciples of Christ in a rapidly changing world and preparing them for a future as adult believers.
Job Responsibilities: Development With the assistance of other church leaders, the youth leader will be responsible for recruiting and training a volunteer team of leaders. This team will share in many of the leader’s responsibilities but will need to receive direction and encouragement from the leader. Together, the leader and volunteers will actively seek to form relationships with each of the youth, including those who have not chosen to participate in Covenant’s formal youth program. Although the youth group has scheduled activities and events in the past, the youth leader will be responsible for increasing such activities, service projects, or fundraisers as needed, paying particular attention to variety and the current demographics of the group. Likewise, we would like to see the youth leader develop stronger music and prayer ministries within the group. In the past, volunteer youth leaders have also taught the high school Sunday School class, providing the opportunity for closer interaction with the youth. In consultation with the Christian Education Committee, we may ask the youth leader to assume this post in the future as well.
Coordination The youth leader will be responsible for overseeing all youth group activities in addition to the regular Sunday night meetings. This does not mean that he or she must plan every event, but it does mean that he or she is responsible for clearly delegating to other volunteers or parents. As the designated director, the youth leader must be prepared to act as a point of contact for the youth and their parents.
Individual Ministry The youth leader is expected to form relationships with our teenagers. This can be accomplished in a variety of ways, but it might reasonably include attending sporting events, theater or musical performances, or other activities of importance to our youth. Mostly, however, it involves talking with them, which might entail some basic counseling such as offering a listening ear or directing them to professional help as needed. Since there are a large number of youth in our congregation, the youth leader should be prepared to oversee this kind of individual outreach on the part of the volunteer leaders as well.
Administration The youth leader is expected to remain in frequent communication with the church office, particularly giving the office timely notification of all youth events and schedules. The youth leader will report regularly to Senior Pastor John Muhlfeld and also monthly to the Session of CPC. He or she will also be responsible for overseeing any administrative activity regarding the youth group volunteers.
Qualifications: The successful applicant will display spiritual maturity, a genuine concern for our teenagers’ emotional, spiritual, and physical journeys, and a deep ability to connect with our youth. The person must have the organizational skills to coordinate a many-faceted program and to oversee the contributions of volunteers. Furthermore, the youth leader must have the time and enough freedom from other responsibilities to devote adequate attention to this important position. He or she will be passionate about developing a well-rounded youth program, one that involves discipleship, worship, service, and outreach, and will be skilled at interacting with parents as well as youth.
Compensation: The Session of Covenant Presbyterian Church has agreed to pay $18,000 a year for this position, which is expected to require approximately 20 hours per week. |
