| This interactive video installation is based on the viewer’s technologically mediated interaction and involution with the first 18 verses of the Gospel of John. The verses are displayed in 14 different languages and a live video feed of the viewer is involuted with the display of each verse causing the viewer to cast her or his own moving form into the text. In addition, the ambient noise created by the viewer(s) within the installation is also monitored, causing further shifts and oscillations of the text. Using John 1: 1-18 — a sacred text containing the basis for much of traditional Christology — the installation enacts it as a donum hominibus ex Deo, but always, already, involuted with human interpretation and technology. By creating multiple audio-visual layers, the ancient technology of text is diffracted through the newer technology of interactive multimedia, recasting the traditional hermeneutic circle as a synesthesian presence. The meta-experience of synesthesia has in some sense been the goal of Modern art practice since Wagner proposed the Gesamtkunstwerk as the full scope of the artist at the beginning of the twentieth century. In “The Hermeneutics of St. John” the inescapable act of interpretation becomes an audio-visual experience through the viewer’s involution in the synesthetic encounter of the human+machine shared performance. University Film and Video Association Conference ScreeningColorado College, Colorado Springs, August, 2009I wrote, directed and edited this film, and shot it on a Canon 5D Mark II. I was moved to make it by reflecting on the horrific cycles of war that catch whole families into them, destroying lives, generation after generation. Thankfully, the Iraq War has ended after 8½ years. This is a 2 minute trailer for the film. |

The Tortilla Moon |

This 7 minute animated short is based on “The Tortilla Moon” a short story which takes place in Mexico in the last few years of the nineteenth century. From the early 1880s onward, the Mexican government fought an on again - off again war with the Yaqui Indian people who lived in the state of Sonora (northwestern part of Mexico). The wars finally ended with the deportation of the majority of the Yaqui away from Sonora to the Yucatán in the 1890s. The story tells of the revelation of the Spirit of the Moon to a little Yaqui girl, María Sewa (Xochitli in Nauhatl, flor in Spanish, flower in English). |

| Life and death, quantum mechanics and poetry, love and friendship, come together in this short film. Jesuit Fr. Joe Ryan is a physics professor who discovers he has terminal stomache cancer. Dr. Karen Armstrong is a Professor of English, a poet, mourning her mother's death. As Joe approaches death, their friendship ebbs and flows as if guided by quantum theory. Biorobots
|
A plant-controlled robotics installation designed to let a plant’s natural phototropism become the cause of the robot’s movement, thus providing the plant with freedom of movement and “will”. Questions of agency and freedom to choose are what I am exploring with this piece. Viewers will interact with the plant-robot system by having the ability to fade up/fade down plant-gro lights. As one light is faded down in one spot, another will fade up a short distance away, motivating the plant-robot system to pursue the light. This fade control could also be done through telepresence. |

It’s a perennial tree with a very attractive foliage that has a very special trick up its sleeve: the leaves - most notably the smaller lateral leaflets - can move with an observable speed. Robotics Component  AH3-R Walking Robot AH3-R Walking Robot’s round body symmetry makes this a very unique hexapod walker. The three DOF (degree of freedom) leg design provides the flexibility required to walk in any direction. The robot uses 18 HS-645 servos for the legs.
