Mate Selection Across Cultures
edited by
Raeann R. Hamon & Bron B. Ingoldsby
Mate Selection Across Cultures explores one of the most basic human endeavors-- couple formation-- with particular attention to those relationships that lead to marriage. For some, the process of selecting a mate can evolve from agreements made between families or arrangements negotiated by matchmakers. For others, a marriage partner is the result of an individual choice made by the prospective partners, with minimal or no consultation from others. For many, love is thought to be an essential prerequisite for marriage, while others hope that love will spring from a well-matched pairing. This book describes how single people in a variety of countries around the world negotiate the marriage market. How do they and/or their families filter through the pool of eligible partners to select the best mate? What impact does socioeconomic standing, historical and political contexts, interpersonal attraction, personal and cultural values, and religious beliefs and practices have on the pairing process? What are the customs, traditions and practices that lead to an exclusive relationship and even marriage? Mate Selection Across Cultures shows us that there is considerable variability in approach to this universal outcome. The text provides a very interesting and readable explanation of the mate selection process in fourteen countries: the U.S.A., the Bahamas, Trinidad And Tobago, Ecuador, Ghana, Kenya, Egypt, Israel, Turkey, Spain, the Netherlands, India, China, and Japan. Each chapter includes attractive and relevant pictures of couples and ceremonies around the world.
