Edward Elric:

Edward Elric, The Fullmetal Alchemist, is the eldest of the protege alchemist brothers. He became a certified State Alchemist, a dog of the military, so that he could search for the fabled Philosopher's Stone. With it's power, he hopes to reunite his brother Alphonse's soul with his missing body. Edward posses the rare ability to perform alchemy without a transmutation circle, making him a powerful alchemist. Yet despite this, he is constantly being underestimated due to his short stature. He is very sensitive about his height and explodes with fits of rage when anyone mentions it. Edward has strong faith in the law of equivalent exchange and applies it to every situation he encounters.

Alphonse Elric:

Alphonse is the younger of the two brothers. Alphonse lost his body in his and Ed's attempt to bring their mother back to life. Ed however, managed to bond Al's soul to a nearby suit of armor. It is because of his armored body that most people mistake him for the Fullmetal Alchemist instead of his brother. Like Edward, Al is proficient at alchemy though not to the same degree as his brother. He is definitely gentler and more understanding than Ed. It is often his diplomacy and level-headedness that keeps Edward from getting into too much trouble.

Roy Mustang:

Colonel Roy Mustang---the Full Flame Alchemist is appropriately named. A State Alchemist, Colonel Mustang specializes in flame alchemy. His white gloves bear the transmutation circle drawn on them, which allow him to produce flames out of thin air with a snap of his fingers (literally!) Roy's ambition is to one day become the Furur for the State Alchemists, and it seems every step he takes is following a strategy that gets him closer to this goal. On the surface, the Colonel seems like a cocky, bossy high-ranking officer whose sole amusement in life is to pester Edward, but his character is deeper than that. Mustang has a lot of dedication and a sense of loyalty to the ones he's close to.

Scar:

Scar is so named for the curious scar that is the chief feature of his face. Scar carries great bitterness and anger towards State Alchemists for the horrors they reeked in his home in Ishbal. He desires to hunt down and destroy every last State Alchemist. He is able to perform fatal alchemy because of the unique tattooing on his arm--the arm that his brother gave to him. He uses this as a tool for destruction against those he hates. Throughout the series, his and Ed's paths continually cross and with each intersection, their relationship changes.

Maes Hughes:

Maes Hughes is a Lieutenant Colonel in the military. He and Colonel Mustang go way back and maintain a strong bond of friendship. He has promised Mustang to help push him to the top of the military so that he may become the new Fuhrur. Hughes is a dedicated friend and a loving father, and he is often portrayed as a very comical, eccentric character because of his infatuation with his wife and new child Elicia whose picture he constantly shoves into the faces of his colleagues. However, despite his deep love for his family and friends, his erratic behavior is often simply a cover for the gravity of the nature of his work and research. In the end, it is this love and loyalty for those closest to him that results in his death. /td>

Izumi Curtis:

Izumi Curtis is Ed and Al's former alchemy instructor. Despite her sexy appearance, she is a fearsome woman to be reckoned with when she is angry. The two brothers have had enough encounters with her swift and deadly violence to be paralyzed with fear at the mere thought of her. However, such exertions often result in her coughing up blood. This is due to her failure to perform successful human transmutation on her dead child. As a result of this failure, though, she is able to perform alchemy without a transmutation circle.

Alex Louis Armstrong:

Armstrong is the State Alchemist of strength. He uses his strength and agility to protect the Elric brothers on many of their excursion. His incredible muscles (along with countless other talents and traditions) have come from a long line of family history. He enjoys flexing, showing off, and bragging about his family traditions at every opportunity, making him seem very comical.

Hohenheim of Light:

Van Hohenheim or Hohenheim of Light, is so named for his ability to transmute light; he is one of the most powerful alchemists in the series. As Ed and Al's missing father, he isn't seen until later in the series, and even then we don't find out very much about him. What is revealed is that his soul is about four hundred years old, due to the fact that he has body-hopped on multiple occasions in the past. Also, we learn the reason for his disappearance: because he had switched bodies so many times, his current one had started to deteriorate prematurely, and he didn't want his boys to grow up with such a father. So he left. Hohenheim has become a very wise, gentle, weary man through his many centuries of life and his assorted burdens and struggles. Nevertheless, he still loves his children and wants to help them, even if that help is undesirable to Ed.
