BASEBALL: THE NATIONAL SPORT OF THE DOMINICAN REPUBLIC!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
~Baseball is a very old and popular tradition in the Dominican. Every town in the Dominican Republic has some form of a baseball team and park. A form of baseball, "stickball," is played in the streets by Dominican boys who lack all of the necessary equipment (bats and baseballs) to play an actual game. The boys use handles from broomsticks and bottle caps to simulate a real baseball game. Below are pictures of children playing "stickball" on the streets of the Dominican.
~The Dominican has supplied more major league baseball players than any other country outside the United States. The first major league player from the Dominican was Ozzie Virgil who pitched for the Detriot Tigers starting in 1958. From then on, numerous other Dominican baseball players have joined the major leagues and become famous, such as outfielders Vladimir Guerrero, Manny Ramirez, and Sammy Sosa, pitcher Pedro Martinez and infielder Albert Pujols whose pictures can be found below.
