Welcome to Dr. Reta Finger’s home page! I have been teaching Bible at Messiah College since 1995. After previous careers teaching elementary school, working in college student services, co-raising two sons, and editing Daughters of Sarah, a Christian feminist magazine, I never lost my passion to understand the biblical writings. This was especially true during my years of writing, editing, and wrestling with what Jesus’ gospel means for women and men today. Finally I returned to academia for a Ph.D. in New Testament from the Joint Program of Northwestern University and Garrett-Evangelical Seminary in Evanston, Illinois (1997).

I focused mostly on the letters of the apostle Paul, although I’ve taught and enjoy every document in the New Testament (and many in the Hebrew Bible). I am especially captivated by the literary skill of the biblical writers, along with a thirst to understand the cultural and political environments from which they emerged. The early Christians lived in the shadow of the world’s greatest superpower then, just as we do today.

Besides numerous articles and essays, I’ve published Paul and the Roman House Churches: A Simulation (1993), now being reprinted by Eerdmans Publishing House; and co-edited a collection of articles, The Wisdom of Daughters: Two Decades of the Voice of Christian Feminism (2001). A new book, Of Widows and Meals: Communal Meals in the Book of Acts, was published in June 2007.
