MycologyThe North American Mycological Association (NAMA) is an organization geared toward amateur and professional mycologists. Their web site has a lot of useful information and links to other mycology related sites. If your interest is in raising edible mushrooms, then Fungi Perfecti is a great place to start. Probably the best single individual's web site about fungi is Tom Volk's web page. Plant TaxonomyThe University of Wisconsin maintains a web site with thousands of images of plants. There are other resources there as well for teaching. Likewise, the Botanical Society of America site is very informative. Some of the major herbaria such as Harvard, KEW, and the Missouri Botanical Gardens have web sites with useful information about plants, the history and authors of their scientific names. The Flora of North America is a multi volume work in progress designed to cover all 20,000 or so species of North American plants. Faith/Science QuestionsAnswers in Genesis and the Institute for Creation Research maintain sites from a recent earth orientation. The American Scientific Affiliation has material reflecting a broader range of Christian viewpoints as does the TalkOrigins site. The National Academy of Sciences is also a rich source of information. MiscellaneousIf you are interested in the conversion of old railroad beds into hiking trails then pay a visit to Rails to Trails. If you like trees and share my disappointment that mature American chestnut trees are now missing from eastern forests as a result of a fungus blight, visit the American Chestnut Foundation's web page to see what is being done to help restore these trees to a place of honor in the forest. |
