Plants and fungi are my particular areas of interest. I've traveled from Nova Scotia to the Florida Everglades, to the states of California , Washington, Arizona, and to Costa Rica, Belize, and Guatemala on botanical field trips. I'm always on the lookout for a new plant. I've accumulated thousands of photographic images of plants representative of these areas which I find very useful to show students in the various courses I teach.

I'm a member of Eastern Penn Mushroomers, a Lancaster, PA based group of people from all sorts of backgrounds who enjoy finding, collecting and, in most cases, eating wild mushrooms. Our club is active all year long with winter lectures and field trips (forays) from April to December. In the picture, I'm smelling (some mushrooms have characteristic smells!) the Jack O'Lantern mushroom, Omphalotus olearius, a bright orange species that glows in the dark. Unfortunately, because of its toxicity, this species can't be eaten. |

This is a very large specimen of saguaro cactus, Cereus giganteus, growing in the Sonoran Desert of Arizona. This species is the largest cactus in the United States and it is the state flower of Arizona. Based on the arms and the overall height, this particular specimen may be over 150 years old. I was dwarfed by it! |

My other interests include gardening, hiking, listening to classical music, traveling, and reading. As a Christian in the sciences, I am deeply interested in the relationship of my faith to the scientific study of origins. This interest has led to me becoming a member of the American Scientific Affiliation (ASA), a professional organization of men and women in science who are interested in exploring the interface of science and faith. I enjoy discussing these issues with faculty and students and I have published two papers in the ASA journal. |
