Here's the story of my third archery buck this year. I killed this buck in Maryland on December 4. I went down for the day by myself. It was their shotgun season, but I was bowhunting. I hunted from the same tree that I killed my 9 point out of earlier this year. This is the third time I hunted this stand, and I have now seen 7 buck from it! (No this is not normal for where we hunt - just a good spot) I got set up a little after light. I didn't think any deer would show until 9:30, but at 8:30 I saw deer in a meadow about 70 yards out heading my way. It was a momma and a pup. I was going to shoot a doe if I had the chance, but when the big doe hit an opening at 25 yards, I just didn't feel like shooting. I let them walk. They had looked back a few times, and I had heard something else down in the meadow as they approached. About 20 minutes later, I saw another deer coming the same way. At first I thought it was a doe, then I saw it was a buck - looked like a big 4 point at first. It came in the same way as the does, so before it got to an opening I drew back expected a 25 yard shot. Then it stopped and just stood there. 80% let-off bows are great. He turned and started coming straight at me, then I saw more points than before. Looked like a real nice buck. I let back down, and waited until he was starting out into a big opening at 10 yards, then drew back for a second time. I grunted lightly to stop him, put the pin behind his shoulder and punched the trigger. The shot looked perfect and he jumped straight up then ran out to about 40 yards and just stood there for several seconds. He got a little wobbly, then took off at a dead run - straight at me! I knocked another arrow, just in time to see him run head long into a tree at 30 yards and fall over. He coughed and kicked for a few seconds then it was all over. I decided to wait a while though. 1/2 hour later a big herd of deer 8 - 15 of them came through (out of range) with 2 of them being spike bucks. Turns out buck #3 is a seven point with a 12 1/2" inside spread (14 outside) with back tines that are both a little over 6" long, his G3 are both 3 1/2" long, and he has one brow tine. Real thin high rack. He was skinny as could be - I guess from rutting. His neck looked like a doe's neck, and he had very little fat on him when we butchered. He dressed out at a light 100 lbs. Which I was very happy about since this was the same drag that took me 2 1/2 hours with my 9 point. Truck and car were both in the shop, so I had the wife's car. Hauled the deer on the roof, got blood on her car. She didn't mind though - she's one of those woman a hunter has to find to stay married very long.
