Printing and the Environment

Should my printing business pay for an environmental certification?

As mentioned on the History page of this web site, it is difficult these days for a printing business to exist without employing safe and stringent environmental practices. Because words like "green" and "sustainable" are culturally encouraged in today's business world, printers need to incorporate their environmental practices into their marketing strategy. Print buyers used to consider only three factors when they purchased their print collateral: Price, Quality, and Service. Now, their is a fourth factor. Print buyers want to know that their printing service is operating in an environmentally responsible manner. For some printers, simply communicating their practices is sufficient for their clients. For others, they may need to consider an environmental certification. Organizations such as the Forest Stewardship Council and the Sustainable Green Printing Partnership help printers with this process. Educated print buyers know to ask about these kinds of things. Only the printer who has carefully considered his or her options and implemented a communication plan will survive in an increasingly competetive business environment.
