Rooting heterosexism in a Creation mandate is neoplatonic,
not Christian. And it is done selectively by those who
practice birth control. (Hanks 4)
The Creation story says that it is not good for humanity in
general to be alone. It does not say that everyone should
have a wife. (Countryman) Is
celibacy then abnormal as well?
Sodom was judged for its inhospitality , not for
homosexuality. (Ezekiel 16:49; Matthew 10:14-15; Bailey; Scanzoni and Mollenkott 56-57)
The men of Sodom want to "know"
Lot's guests, as in merely
to become acquainted with them.
The NT commentary on Sodom criticizes
sex with angels or
sex with beasts, "strange flesh" (Jude 7 KJV), not
homosexuality. (Bailey)
The Sodom story is about gang rape, not homosexuality.
See the similar story about Gibeah in Judges 19. How can
they be about homosexuals if they gang-rape an old man's
concubine?
In the OT "abomination" is little more than ritual
uncleanness. Aren't Christians who eat pork and wear
clothing of mixed fabric already abominations? (Boswell [1980] 100)
But wasn't Jesus' reference to the Law was always
monolithic, never divided into three parts? (Johnston 74)
Wasn't the OT prohibition of male homosexuality solely to
assure the propagation of humanity? In our overpopulated
world, that assurance is no longer necessary.
The OT prohibited male homosexuality because anything that
put a man in a passive sexual role was considered degrading.
(Johnston 58) Isn't that
paternalistic and homophobic?
Lesbianism is not addressed in the OT. Doesn't this
suggest that the passages that do address homosexuality were
not focusing on the sameness of the sex?
The OT celebrates sexuality (as in the Song of Solomon,
between an unmarried man and woman). Haven't you fallen
into the trap of the gnostic heresy that the body is sinful?
(Nelson)
Didn't God approve of David and Jonathan's homosexual
relationship? (II Sam 1:28) (Horner)
