An idol is an imagination that competes with God for attention and worship. Subjectively a person can report that his or her homosexuality is consonant with wholehearted devotion to God. Objectively, some imaginations are "vain" (empty, foolish; Romans 1:21). If idol worshippers were only those who thought they were worshipping idols, no one would be an idol worshipper, since each worshipper in his or her own framework is worshipping not an idol but god.
