So you've probably heard of step before, especially with movies such as "Stomp the Yard" being released. But you may be wondering, what is step? And even more, where did it start?
We've designed this page to give you a better understanding of this rich cultural tradition. We have included a brief history of the art form, a video and testimonies from one college's step team, and even a brief instructional video so you can learn how to step too!
Stepping is a form of percussive dance that uses the body to create rhythms. It can include stomping, clapping, chants, and even props such as canes. It is an African American tradition with African roots. Some believe it rose from the "gumboot" dance from Africa, though it now seems as though these traditions developed around the same time on different continents without any influence on each other. Stepping has also drawn inspiration from military drills, tap dancing, and dance routines of various music groups and African cultures.
Step is often practiced today in school and church groups. It is very popular in black Greek societies, where step shows and yard shows are common.
