Required Course Material: Comap, For All Practical Purposes, 5th Edition, W. H. Freeman and Company, 2000.
Course objectives:
This course is designed to introduce students to systematic, mathematical thinking as it applies to classical problems in the history of mathematics and as it connects to modern society. We will study topics in the following areas:
1. Management Science: Euler and Hamiltonian circuits.
2. Probability and Statistics: Producing and Exploring data, and an
introduction to the mathematics of chance.
3. Coding Information: Identification numbers and cryptography.
4. Social Choice and Decision-Making: voting schemes, fair division,
and game theory.
5. Size and Shape: symmetry and patterns, tiling the plane.
6. Modeling: logic.
Prerequisites:
The only prerequisite for the course is knowledge of basic algebra skills. Math 101 fulfils the general education requirement for the mathematical sciences; however, it is not the best choice for all students. If you have successfully completed a calculus or precalculus course, you should not be enrolled in this course; MAT 105 or Mat 111 is a better choice. You may also want to consider a computer science or statistics course, especially if such courses are required or closely related to your major.
Resources:
1. Several computer labs (Frey 145, 166, and 245) equipped with
appropriate software.
2. The mathematics reading room (Frey 351).
3. Student math resource people available Monday through Thursday
nights in Frey 349 and 351.
During each class, we will discuss material from the text. You should read each section before it is discussed. When this discussion is completed, practice problems will be assigned. Each day we will discuss the assigned homework from the previous day. Approximately one day each week there will be a graded assignment. This may be an in-class quiz or a take-home assignment. Your attendance is expected at all class sessions. Everyone may miss 1 class. After that, your attendance grade will drop by 20 points for each missed class. Excessive absences will be detrimental to your grade. Exams may be made up only with a valid excuse, and quizzes cannot be made up. The lowest quiz grade will be dropped. Work should be handed in at the beginning of class on the date it is due. Every day that the work is late will result in a 10% reduction of your grade.
Grading: Hour Exams (3) 300 points
Quizzes 100 points
Attendance 200 points
Projects 100 points
Final Exam 200 points
